Introducting an IPO that allows you to Take Stock in Your Community
Dominic was introduced to the Take Stock in Children program by Mr. Eric Johnson, who directs after-school enrichment programs throughout the City of Jacksonville. Through Dominic's participation in Team Up at Matthew Gilbert MS, Mr. Johnson recognized his potential and believed Dominic deserved the opportunity to go to college.
The Take Stock in Children program is designed for students just like Dominic. Those striving for success, but because of life circumstances may be financially unable to pay for college. Dominic's mother was a single parent with eight children, Dominic being the youngest. When his mother heard the news that he may be eligible to receive a Take Stock in Children scholarship, she was very excited for the opportunity to not only go to college, but to have a mentor as well.
Dominic was enrolled in the program in 2002 and was matched with a mentor. The pair met at school for about an hour every week. During their one hour sessions, their discussions ranged from current events to Dominic's everyday struggles. When speaking about their relationship, Dominic has said, "I see my mentor as a father figure. He gives me encouragement through the hard times. He also informs and shows me how to handle situations properly. I don’t know where I would be without his guidance."
Dominic graduated from Mandarin High School on May 26, 2006, and with the help of Take Stock attended and graduated from Florida State College at Jacksonville with a degree in Business Administration.

Committing financially to our students now will ensure they have the support necessary to navigate through high school and provide the resources to be successful in college.
This small investment will pay huge dividends to the Jacksonville Community in the near future as these students stay in school, achieve a post-secondary education and become productive participating members of our city.
Take Stock in Children results speak for themselves:
Take Stock in Children was established in 1995 as a non-profit organization that provides a unique opportunity for low-income and at-risk students, many from minority families, to escape the cycle of poverty through successful education. We offer our students college scholarships, caring volunteer mentors, in-school support and hope for a better life. Our comprehensive services start in middle school and continue through high school and include the student’s transition into college.
Mentors are truly the key to the success of Take Stock in Children. They provide a consistent force as a caring adult in each student’s life. Mentors encourage students to make the correct choices that will help them through high school and into college.
In school support through a Take Stock in Children Student Advocate ensures the students are staying on track academically and that the mentor-student relationship is going well.
The pre-paid scholarship changes the conversation from "if you go to college" to "when you go to college". The students are accountable to stay true to the contract they sign with Take Stock in Children.
